Is It Actually Acne?
How to Tell the Difference Between Fungal Acne and Common Acne

By O Skin Expert

Not all breakouts are created equal and treating the wrong one with the wrong ingredients is exactly how skin gets stuck in a cycle that never clears.

Fungal acne and regular acne (acne vulgaris) can look almost identical. But they have different causes, different triggers and need completely different treatment approaches. Knowing which one you're dealing with is the first step to actually clearing it.

What is regular acne (acne vulgaris)?

Common acne (acne vulgaris) is a chaotic mix of blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and papules, with later stages bringing deep cysts and nodules (hard, red and sore infections). It has a mind of its own, driven by excessive oil production, hormonal imbalances and bacteria, and can spread across the face, neck, chest and back.

What is fungal acne?

Despite the name, fungal acne isn't technically acne at all. It's a condition called Malassezia folliculitis and is caused by an overgrowth of yeast (Malassezia) that naturally lives on the skin.

This yeast is normally harmless and part of your skin's microbiome. But in certain conditions like heat, sweat, humidity, occlusive skincare it multiplies rapidly and triggers inflammation inside the hair follicles.

How to tell them apart

Fungal acne tends to:

Appear as small, uniform, itchy bumps (all roughly the same size)

Cluster on the forehead, chest or back

Feel itchy (regular acne typically doesn't)

Not respond to standard acne treatments or get worse with them

Regular acne tends to:

Vary in size, type and depth

Appear on the face, jawline, back or chest

Include blackheads, whiteheads and deeper cystic lesions

Respond (eventually) to antibacterial and oil-regulating ingredients

The key giveaway: if you've been using acne products consistently and your skin isn't improving (or is getting worse) fungal acne is worth investigating.

Why is matters

Treating fungal acne with standard acne products, especially heavy moisturisers, certain oils and antibacterial ingredients can actively feed the yeast and worsen the condition.

Getting the right diagnosis from a skin therapist is the fastest path to clearing it. A professional can identify the difference, adjust your protocol accordingly and save you months of treating the wrong condition.

Why The Wrong Treatment Makes It Worse

Treating fungal acne takes a very different course to common acne, you’ll need products that contain anti-fungal ingredients, very light weight (non-oily) creams and to make sure you always shower after sweating and exercise (this is where the fungus thrives).

If you mistake fungal acne for acne vulgaris you might reach for thick barrier creams or oil-rich products to “soothe” the bumps, calm inflammation or balance the skin barrier unknowingly feeding the yeast. Alternatively, you might overuse antibacterial treatments that strip the skin but don’t address the root cause.

For fungal acne, the focus shifts to:

Anti-fungal ingredients

Lightweight, breathable formulations

Avoiding heavy oils and occlusives

Keeping skin clean and dry after sweating

Supporting a balanced microbiome

Lifestyle habits matter here too. Showering after exercise, changing out of sweaty clothes promptly and avoiding tight synthetic fabrics can significantly reduce flare-ups.

For acne vulgaris however, the strategy is more corrective and long-term. It involves regulating oil, balancing hormones where possible, encouraging healthy desquamation (shedding of dead skin cells) and preventing bacterial overgrowth.

Two different root causes and two completely different game plans.

The Moral Of The Story

Moral of the story: If your bumps are all the same size, love to cluster and itch like they have a vendetta, it might be time to call out the fungus among us. Most importantly, if you’re unsure please consult with an O Skin Expert who can confidently diagnose your condition and get you on the right track.

Skin is nuanced and social media self-diagnosis can only take you so far. What looks like acne isn’t always acne and treating blindly can delay real progress.

At O COSMEDICS, we believe in correction through education because when you understand what you’re treating and why, you empower your skin to respond properly.

Rather than claim the Holy Grail on barely-there volumes, O Cosmedics is formulated with potent, concentrated active ingredients. Each formulation is based on ‘functional actives’, where we use the active ingredient to the dose or percentage that the scientist recommends will actually make a difference to the skin.

The Moral If you’re just starting your O Cosmedics skin health journey, here’s three things that may happen: The Story

1. Your skin immediately loves it: and you become an instant O lover! Perfect outcome.

2. Your skin may purge: You may experience one of the following: warmth as the actives enter your skin, your skin may flush, tingle, breakout, feel dry or flaky. Don’t panic. Simply stop using everything and allow your skin to return to normal. Reintroduce the products one at a time giving your skin time to adapt to a new level of skin care. Purging means your cells are annoyed with you for making them “get back to work” and are resisting acclimatising. Be patient and they will soon understand who’s boss!

3. Your skin may look older: Ok, fair to say not the look we were going for yet a good sign just the same. This can happen if you are not used to using an active skin care, so when you do it pushes the underlying redundant cells to the skin’s surface and your skin can look dull, devitalised and yes, older. The good news is this is a sign your products are working, and the redundant cells are turning over! The best option is to visit an approved O Cosmedics professional clinic who will perform an enzyme peel to reveal fresh, radiant, youthful skin.

No matter what happens, remember that even options 2 and 3 will bring you back to 1, making you too a life-long member of the O Cosmedics family!

When it comes to truly healthy skin there are three vitamins that form the backbone of almost every effective skincare routine. In professional skincare circles they’re widely known as the ABCs of skincare: Vitamin A, Vitamin B and Vitamin C.

These vitamins aren’t trending ingredients or passing fads, they are fundamental to how the skin functions, repairs and protects itself on a daily basis. Each plays a distinct and powerful role within the skin working both independently and synergistically to maintain balance, resilience and long-term skin health.

Together they support everything from cellular renewal and barrier strength to collagen production, pigment regulation and protection from environmental stress. When these vitamins are present in the skin in the right forms and delivered correctly they help create the conditions for skin to behave optimally.

Understanding what each vitamin does allows you to see why they are considered the ultimate foundation of corrective skincare.
